Start of season This past year was very interesting to say the least. I did not play well in any LPGA event. I struggled with my chipping at times, which used to be my "bread and butter." I went back to the LPGA final stage of Q-school in December. Played terrible the first round and shot myself out of contention.
I went to European or LET Q-school in Spain in early January. Played decent in my morning rounds, but could not putt in the afternoon rounds. I was a little shaky, I think I was taking too much Advil PM to sleep during the nights. I flew back to PDX after not making it to the second stage for LET qualifying and was unsure of what my future should be... I looked into working in the financial world, or possibly teaching somewhere... But, my heart kept telling me I should keep pursuing my dream of winning on the LPGA tour. I went south for 3 weeks, worked my butt off on my short game, and played in the Ohio State Alumni match in Florida. My college coach got in my face and said I didn't look sharp, I needed to play with more of an attitude! Plus more focused practice. Stop going through the motions. This triggered a new focus and a plan. I then played with Hall of Fame greats JoAnne Carner and Marlene Streit at the Wander's Club in Wellington, Florida. I was amazed how focused and determined they were on the golf course, when just playing for pride. They chatted with me afterwards and gave me some advice... First of all, to read my own putts because they were very impressed with that part of my game. To hit more 3/4 shots into the green, and that this would help me score! Lastly, they said I do not need to hit it any further, but how could I gain some more distance? I replied "I have tried everything, I think this is my just how far I am going to hit the ball.." JoAnne replied that "you have to learn how to hit it far." She thought swinging a baseball bat at waist high and getting the swoosh to come after the ball would really help me. Then slowly leaning over and repeating the same thing to simulate the golf swing. The next two weeks I spent in Arizona. I played in two Grasshopper Tour events. LPGA player Dina Ammaccapane founded the tour to give female pro's and amateur's more opportunity to compete and play on nice golf courses. I finished fourth and first in those two events. I was able to focus and score on the golf course again. It felt wonderful! I am going to Monday qualify for the first two events in the US in mid March. The RR Donnelly and the KIA Classic. |
